If you've spent years thinking you just have sensitive skin — this one is for you.
Because here's what nobody ever told you, and what I wish someone had told me: sensitive skin is rarely who you are. It's what your skin is going through.
The story you've been telling yourself
You know the moment I mean.
You're standing in front of the bathroom mirror, leaning in close, and your skin is red again. Stinging again. And that new cream — the one your friend swears by, the one with all the five-star reviews — is sitting on your counter like a small betrayal.
Maybe you have a drawer somewhere. I did. A drawer full of almost-full bottles, each one a little moment of hope that ended in the same place: "Not for me. Nothing works for me."
And somewhere along the way, quietly, you stopped saying "my skin is reacting" and started saying "I just have sensitive skin." As if it were your name. As if it were a sentence you'd been handed and simply had to serve.
I want you to hear something, woman to woman, and I want you to really let it land: you didn't do anything wrong. And your skin was never broken.
Your skin barrier — that thin, brave, hardworking layer that holds your moisture in and keeps the world out — is simply overwhelmed. It has been asked to handle too much, for too long. And when your barrier can't do its job anymore, everything begins to sting, flake, and flare.
That's not who you are. That's a state your skin is in.
And states can change.
How sensitive skin gets created
Think of your skincare like a sandwich. One or two good ingredients, layered with care? Beautiful. But pile on a cleanser, a toner, an exfoliant, three serums, and a fragranced cream on top — and now nothing works, and your skin is left carrying the whole mess.
That's how most sensitivity is created. Not by bad luck. Not by bad skin. By too much.
I learned this in the hardest way I could have.
When I moved from the Netherlands to the US, my skin fell apart. Red, tight, reactive — a face I didn't recognize in a life I was still learning. And here's what made it hurt more: I was a trained formulator. This was my craft. I stood in front of that mirror in a new country, far from my parents, far from everything familiar, and I couldn't fix my own face.
I cried over it more than once. I can admit that now.
But that low moment led me to a discovery that changed everything: the EU bans over 1,600 ingredients from skincare. The US bans 38. Thirty-eight.
So many women here are layering products that quietly work against their barrier every single day — and then blaming themselves when their skin reacts. Carrying that quiet shame into every mirror, every photo, every "you look tired" comment.
It was never your fault. Your skin has been doing its very best with what it was given. Honestly? It has been protecting you this whole time. The redness, the stinging — that's not your skin failing you. That's your skin asking you.
And life plays its part too. Stress. Short nights. A move. A loss. A new season, a new decade, the natural shifts that come with your 40s and beyond. Your skin changes as your life changes — and a routine that fit your life five years ago may simply not fit the woman you are today.
What was created can be reset
Now here's the part I love telling you. The part I wish I could have whispered to myself in front of that mirror years ago.
Because your sensitivity was created — by products, by habits, by life — it can also be reset. Not with more. With less, done right.
A reset isn't complicated. It starts with three gentle moves:
Stop. Set aside the harsh cleansers, the fragrance, the pile of actives. Your barrier can't find its calm while it's still being asked to handle everything at once. This part takes courage — it feels like doing nothing. It isn't. It's the first kindness.
Simplify. Your skin needs far less than the industry wants you to believe. A gentle cleanse and real barrier support — morning and evening. Two steps. That's it.
Support. Give your barrier what it needs so it can do its job again. And when it does, something quietly beautiful happens: the stinging softens. The flare-ups grow further apart. Your skin stops shouting — because someone is finally listening.
I won't promise you'll wake up different tomorrow. I will never promise you that, because I promised myself I'd always tell you the truth. But give your skin a calm, consistent routine, and most women feel the shift begin within the first week — softer, calmer, less reactive — with real change unfolding gently over the weeks that follow.
And one morning — this is my favorite part — you'll lean into that same mirror and realize you're not checking for redness anymore. You're just looking at yourself.
Your skin doesn't need to be fought. It needs to be understood.
